minutiae x Centre Pompidou

When Centre Pompidou’s Studio 13/16 in Paris invited us to create a participatory artwork for young people to help them understand and interpret the deluge of content we consume, our response was an enthusiastic YES! With recent advances in generative AI, we find ourselves suddenly thrust into a future where the lines between what’s real and artificial have been radically blurred.

This shift will undoubtedly impact all of humanity, but perhaps even more so for a generation with little to no reference to life before synthetic media existed. This is the theme for i.Réels (UnReal) at Studio 13/16, Centre Pompidou, a group show inviting a younger audience to explore how to understand and interpret images.

Inspired by Sol Lewitt’s seminal “Instructions” we designed a hybrid experience that allows visitors to reflect on how we consume images and how it affects the images we create ourselves. minutiae’s instructions are divided into four categories—Time, Geography, Location, and Senses—and can be undertaken individually or as a group exercise.

The instructions take the audience on a journey by foot in the area around Centre Pompidou, encouraging them to use their senses and awareness as cues for capturing their surroundings with the help of their phones, resulting in a set of images distinct and unique from what they would normally capture. After the 15-30 minute journey is completed, the audience returns to Studio 13/16, where the resulting photos are later printed and mounted on a Grid (similar to the Apps Grid screen) on a 15-meter paper roll.

The show runs from December 9th, 2023, to March 10, 2024, at Place Georges-Pompidou, 75004 Paris, France.

Looking ahead to 2024, we plan to continue expanding minutiae’s mission with more workshops and events. If you’re interested in collaborating, please reach out for further details.
